Apple Creek Road was plowed around noon today and heavily salted, a process that in our cold temperatures today will take a few hours to start working. The salting will work most effectively tomorrow afternoon when it warms some more. Keep in mind that even with salting there will still be some slick spots in shaded areas.
We'll flirt with 0 degrees again tonight, but it starts warming up in the afternoons, and with each passing day it will be less cold at night and warmer in the afternoons. The next incoming system for the second half of the weekend is all liquid at this time.

It's now 27 here but so far I'm not noticing much change in the road which still have a lot of packed snow on it. I suspect it may take much more traffic on the road in addition to even warmer temps to get to where we see much melting in this section of the road.
ReplyDeleteIt will take the warmer temps like you have now. There was an inversion this morning where at 830am it was 18 degrees at the end of Staymon and 1 degree at the bottom/entrance...as big a difference as I've ever seen in a few years. Direct sun really helps, but a lot of us don't have that luxury this time of year. I've gotten a couple of reports of folks traveling AC Road and they aren't having troubles getting around. Wouldn't guarantee that for 2WD cars, though.
DeleteHaywood County Schools have been closed again tomorrow (teacher work day, though) because so many of the side and back roads remain snow and ice covered. Nature of the beast with these bitter night time temps, but roads will improve each afternoon with the milder high temps.
ReplyDeletePassing this along, an email from Chris Martin down low, where it got to 35 degrees earlier:
ReplyDelete"People are trying to move up road and getting stuck. Front wheel drive hasn’t a chance. There is a 4 wheel drive stopped in road to put on chains. More cars coming up behind them. One person reported very slick around Jan’s curve at the mirror."
