Snowfall Map

The Greenville-Spartanburg NWS office put out a map of this past weekend's snowfall.  You can click on it to enlarge it, though it's not a huge file.  Interesting to note the far reaching tongue of heavier snowfall came down along I-40 and points west in Haywood County, down very close to ACA.

Temps are bitterly cold for several more days, so ice stays ice.  Salting any trouble spots is about all we can do, that and taking extra precaution driving.  Ice is what I call "The Great Equalizer" between the wide range of vehicles out there...it can make all of us loose control.

Stay warm!

  1. We had about 2-3 inches up at the top, with a light layer of ice under the snow. 4WD only to get to our house.

  2. Thanks, Al. Yeah, when I was in at my station at 3am I was watI-40 corridor going 'uh-oh' as we were in line for even more snow. Done deal by Wednesday, but at this point the snow has fallen on a frozen road, so no slush, only ice, save for what any salt can do. It's SO important to get feedback like this, so THANK YOU! I have no doubt my non-4WD old Subaru would NOT be able to get up the driveway! Unfortunately, it'll be several days before we see temps amenable to even the slightest melting.

I will add that next Sunday-Tuesday SOMEbody in the east will get walloped with a winter storm. Methinks ACA will be on the lesser, back-door side of precip, but it may be a nightmare from DC to Boston, or further inland to Pittsburgh and Cleveland. And I'm still chuckling over the advanced maps that showed a 'milder' winter this year. May well, be, but you wouldn't know it at this time.

    Thanks again, Al,
    Bob

  3. Yeah, my temperature tracking showed that we are well above normal for the year. As the average temperature for any year rarely varies by more than a degree, I figured sometime before the end of the year we had to get some wicked bad cold to average everything out. Here it is..:+(

I have to fly out to CT on Sunday, and looking at the current low pressure systems the one getting ready to impact the Pacific NW looks pretty strong, and will be in the east by the weekend, so I fear you are correct and my trip could be impacted.

  4. I'm in the middle of my forecasts this morning, and on my Monday AM map I have the low close to Long Island at 988mb or lower, which is nasty wind. Looks like rain along I-95, but close to the switchover inland, somebody is going to get dumped on.Good luck! I'm guessing y'all/ACA are continuing to get light snow as the winds and precip are perfectly lined up to come in down I-40. Pipes are surely frozen! ugh
